Where to Find Limits
Limits are accessed from the Outfall Overview Page. Each outfall has a Limits table showing all existing limits for that location.
Creating a Limit
Click + New Limit from the Limits table.
Select the analyte and define limit values (range or maximum).
Choose a limit type (e.g., instantaneous, average).
Select a limit definition: Notification or Compliance.
Add rationale for why the limit exists.
Save the limit.
Once saved:
notification limits become active immediately.
compliance limits are initially saved with a New status until connected to a legal control.
limit records do not have an “active” toggle. Status is automatically determined based on how the limit is configured and connected.
Limit Attributes
Each limit includes the following fields:
Analyte – The chemical or parameter to monitor.
Min/Max Values – Define the acceptable range or maximum.
Unit of Measure – Set the unit (e.g., mg/L).
Limit Type – Defines how results are evaluated (e.g., instantaneous, average).
Limit Definition – Determines if the limit is a Notification (non-enforceable) or Compliance (enforceable).
Limit Rationale – The reason for the limit (e.g., CFR, local limits, TRC).
Notification Limits
Notification limits trigger alerts when exceeded but do not result in violations or compliance state changes.
Status Behavior:
Active – Automatically active upon creation.
Inactive – Becomes inactive if the outfall is inactive or if the limit is archived.
Deleted – Can be removed at any time; deleted limits cannot be recovered.
Reactivating the outfall also reactivates inactive notification limits.
Compliance Limits
Compliance limits are enforceable and may be tied to legal controls. When a limit is connected to a control (e.g., a permit), it becomes part of the formal compliance workflow.
Status Behavior:
New – Not yet connected to a legal control. Editable and deletable.
Active – Connected to a legal control and within effective dates. Not editable.
Upcoming – Attached to a legal control with future effective dates.
Available – Attached to a control that is pending, expired, or terminated.
Inactive – Occurs if the outfall is inactive or manually updated. Can be manually switched back to “Available.”
Deleted – Only “New” limits can be deleted.
Compliance limits do not automatically reactivate if the outfall becomes active again. They must be manually updated.
