Industrial User (IU) Overview Page

View and manage IU status, contacts, and outfalls. Learn how statuses work and how to safely update or delete industrial users.

Accessing the IU Overview Page

The IU Overview Page provides a centralized view of each Industrial User’s core information.

Access it by clicking any row in the IU Directory. From here, you can review program-critical details, manage user status, and navigate to additional records such as sample reports.

The page includes two tabs:
Overview – Displays IU summary, contacts, and outfalls

What’s on the Overview Tab

The Overview tab contains three key sections:

1. IU Summary

This top section displays:

  • IU name and status

  • Contact and operational details from the IU create/edit form

  • Active permit information (if applicable)

Click Edit in the top-right to make changes. IU status appears directly to the right of the IU name and is always visible.

2. Contacts

Displays any contacts associated with the IU. These can be added or edited through the IU edit form.

3. Outfalls

Shows the sampling points (outfalls) configured for this IU. These are managed through the permit and sampling configuration workflows.

Understanding IU Statuses

IU status is a critical field used to indicate whether an industrial user is actively discharging and regulated, no longer operational, or removed from the system entirely.

Active

  • Indicates the IU is operational and may be discharging.

  • The IU can be edited or marked inactive (if no permits are active).

  • Cannot be deleted.

Inactive

  • Indicates the IU is no longer operational.

  • All legal controls (permits, sample schedules) must be terminated before an IU can be marked inactive.

  • When inactivated:

    • Sample configurations are terminated

    • Scheduled sample reports are deleted

    • Related elements (outfalls, contacts, limits) are also marked inactive

  • These elements remain inactive even if the IU is reactivated. You must manually re-enable them if needed.

  • Inactive IUs can be edited, reactivated, or deleted.

Deleted

  • Only inactive IUs can be deleted.

  • Once deleted, an IU cannot be restored by the user.

Built-In Safeguards

The system prevents status changes that could compromise your compliance records:

  • You cannot mark an IU as inactive if they have an active permit. A tooltip explains this requirement and prompts you to terminate permits first.

  • Inactivating an IU triggers a confirmation step, ensuring users don’t accidentally disrupt compliance workflows.

  • Attempting to toggle status on a regulated IU will show a message explaining the required steps.

These safeguards help protect program data and maintain workflow integrity.

Try It Out

As part of system testing or onboarding, we recommend trying the following:

  1. Change an IU without active permits from Active to Inactive.

  2. Delete an IU once it’s been marked Inactive.

  3. Locate an IU with an active permit and confirm that the status toggle is disabled, with an explanation message.
