Setting Map Coordinates on Assemblies and Locations

How to place, edit, and reset map pins for backflow assemblies and locations, and how to use the map of every assembly at a property.

Who this article is for: Authority Users

Overview

Assemblies and locations now have real, editable map coordinates on an interactive map. You can place a pin by clicking the map, dragging it, or typing latitude and longitude. A location's coordinate is also set automatically from its address the first time someone opens the location, or when it's saved.

There is also a map view of every assembly at a property, with each pin colored by compliance status.

Before you begin

Users who can edit an assembly or location can also edit its coordinates; there is no separate permission for it. Users with the Read Only role can view coordinates but can't save changes to them.

Setting an assembly's coordinates

  1. Open the assembly. On the map tile in the header, select the pencil icon (tooltip: Edit coordinates).

  2. The Assembly coordinates window opens. Place the pin any of three ways:

    • Click anywhere on the map

    • Drag the pin

    • Type into Latitude and Longitude

  3. Select Save. You will see Coordinates saved successfully.

Coordinates display to six decimal places. Latitude accepts −90 to 90 and Longitude −180 to 180; outside that you will see Must be between -90 and 90 or Must be between -180 and 180.

You can also edit them in the Map Coordinates section of the full Edit Assembly form, where they save with the rest of the form.

📝 An assembly with no pin of its own follows its location. While the pin sits on the location you will see one pin and nothing custom is stored. Move it and a second pin appears — a building icon for the location, showing where the assembly came from. Once the pin has moved, a Reset to Address button appears; it moves the pin back to the location's point. Select Save to clear the custom coordinate.

If the assembly has no location to draw on, the map area reads No location available for this assembly.

Setting a location's coordinates

Same pencil icon, opening the Location coordinates window. A location has a single building pin. If the app couldn't match the address, the pencil is grayed out; add the coordinate under Map Coordinates in Edit Location instead.

Most locations get a pin without anyone touching the map: the app places it from the address the first time the location is opened or saved.

⚠️ An approximate address will not save an untouched pin. If the address only resolves to a rough area you will get This address only resolves to an approximate area. Drag the pin to the exact spot to save it. Drag it to the right spot and it saves normally. Coarse matches — new construction, rural routes, PO boxes, unrecognized addresses — are dropped rather than stored, so the location has no coordinate until someone places the pin.

With no address at all, the map area reads No address to place on the map.

Seeing every assembly at a property

On a location's Assemblies tab — and mirrored on an assembly's Location tab — a two-button toggle switches between the table and a map of every assembly at that property. The buttons are icons, not words: a rows icon for the table and a map icon for the map. It opens on the table, and remembers your choice. Inactive assemblies only show when Show Inactive is on, and they appear in gray.

Each assembly with its own pin shows as a teardrop colored by compliance, with a glyph inside so color is not the only signal:

Status

Compliant

green

question mark

Assemblies without their own pin fold into the location's building pin as a count. Nearby pins merge into a cluster showing a count — select it to zoom in. Selecting an assembly pin opens that assembly. Hover over the building pin to see which assemblies are there.

The legend doubles as a filter: each status has an eye toggle that shows or hides those pins.

If there is nothing to draw, the map reads No assemblies with a location to map yet.

What happens next

Both maps have a Street / Satellite toggle (icons only on the map tile), and each one remembers your choice. The map tile and the coordinates windows also have an Open in Google Maps icon that opens the point in a new tab. Where a coordinate exists, read-only Latitude and Longitude appear in Standard Properties on the Details tab, and are available as export columns on the Assemblies and Locations reports (off by default on the grid).

FAQ

Why does this location have no map pin?

The app couldn't match its address. Check the address, or open Edit Location and type the latitude and longitude under Map Coordinates. If the address only matches an approximate area, you'll see a faded pin instead. Drag it to the right spot and save.

I corrected the address but the pin didn't move. How do I move it?

Some pins stay where they are when the address changes, such as a pin someone placed by hand or one whose address changed through billing sync. To move it, drag the pin, or open Edit Location, select Reset to Address under Map Coordinates, and save.

Why do all the assemblies at this property share one pin?

They have no pin of their own, so they inherit the location's. Give one a custom pin to place it where the device actually sits.

Why is Latitude blank in my table or CSV export when the detail page shows one?

The table and export only show saved coordinates. If the address only matches an approximate area, the page shows a faded estimate that isn't saved. Drag the pin to the right spot and save. An assembly without its own pin shows its location's coordinate.

Can I drop the pin using my phone's GPS?

Not in this release. Pins are placed by tapping, dragging, or typing coordinates.

Can I bring coordinates over from our old system?

Not today — the import tool has no coordinate field and does not geocode on import. Imported locations start without a coordinate and get one the first time someone opens them.

Why does the map say compliance status couldn't be loaded?

When you see Compliance status couldn't be loaded — pin colors unavailable, the compliance data didn't load, so don't rely on any pin colors on that map. Refresh the page to try again.
