Classifying Industrial Users with IU Types

How to apply standard and custom IU Types, filter the inventory by them, and manage the list under Configurations.

Overview

IU Types let you classify the industrial users in your inventory — significant, categorical, food service, dental, and any category of your own. Once a facility is labeled you can filter the inventory by type, which is what makes an audit request like "list every SIU you regulate" a few seconds of work instead of an afternoon.

💡 You can filter the inventory by type even when the column is hidden. Hiding a column only removes it from view; it stays available to search and filter on.

The standard types

Every program starts with the same seven:

Label

Full name

SIU

Significant Industrial User

CIU

Categorical Industrial User

NDCIU

Non-Discharging Categorical Industrial User

NSCIU

Non-Significant Categorical Industrial User

MIU

Minor Industrial User

FSE

Food Service Establishment

Dental

Dental Facility

⚠️ Standard types can't be renamed or deleted. They are shared across every program so the labels mean the same thing everywhere. If you need something different, add a custom type alongside them.

Applying a type to a facility

  1. Open the industrial user and edit it.

  2. In the IU Type field, choose from the list.

  3. Save.

A facility can carry more than one type. A categorical user that is also a food service establishment can hold both, and it will appear when you filter for either.

Adding your own types

Custom types are managed under Configurations → POTW, on the Industrial User Types tab.

  1. Go to the Industrial User Types tab.

  2. Click + New IU Type.

  3. Give it a name and save.

The tab also shows how many facilities each type is applied to, standard and custom alike — a quick way to sanity-check a classification before an audit, or to spot a type nobody is using.

Removing a custom type

  1. Tick the box next to the type or types you want to remove.

  2. Use the delete control at the top right of the table.

💡 The name becomes available again afterwards. If you delete a custom type and later want the same name back, you can create it again — a removed type does not keep its name reserved.

FAQ

Why can't I delete an IU type?

It's one of the seven standard types, and those are fixed. Standard types cannot be deleted — add a custom type instead.

Why can't I rename an IU type?

The seven standard types are fixed, so they cannot be renamed. Create a custom type with the name you want.

Why isn't a facility showing up when I filter by IU type?

Either no type is applied to it, or a different one is. Open the facility and check its IU Type field.

Why don't I see the IU Type(s) column in the table?

It's hidden. Filtering by type still works even when the column isn't shown — to display it, use the table's column controls and turn on IU Type(s).

Why does the count on the types tab look wrong?

It counts the facilities a type is applied to, not permits or outfalls. Compare it against a filtered inventory list.
