Who this article is for: Stormwater administrators who manage Best Management Practices settings.
Overview
Each Management Practice (also called a BMP, or Best Management Practice) has a Map Marker setting. It sets the symbol used for every implementation of that Management Practice on the map, so different BMP types can look different at a glance.
The marker library has the original Circle with check (default) plus twelve more shapes. You can also upload your own image as a marker. Built-in shapes show green while an implementation has no open deficiencies and red while it has at least one.
Before You Begin
You need an administrator account. The Best Management Practices link appears in the App Settings card of Settings only for administrators.
You can change the marker only on Management Practices your organization created. Management Practices that come from the SwiftComply library have no EDIT button in your account.
Where Map Marker appears depends on whether the SWPPP builder is turned on for your account:
SWPPP builder on: Map Marker is in the SWPPP Map Settings card, inside Icon Settings, and shows only when MP Shape is Marker.
SWPPP builder off: there is no SWPPP Map Settings card. Map Marker is at the bottom of the MP Settings card instead.
Choosing a Map Marker
Click the Settings gear icon in the upper right corner of the page.
In the App Settings card, click Best Management Practices. The Management Practices page opens.
Click EDIT next to the Management Practice you want to change, or click ADD MANAGEMENT PRACTICE at the bottom of the page to create a new one.
In the SWPPP Map Settings card, set MP Shape to Marker. Marker is already selected for a new Management Practice.
Under Icon Settings, open the Map Marker dropdown and select a marker. A preview of the selected marker appears below the dropdown.
Click SAVE. You return to the Management Practices page, and the implementations of this Management Practice use the new marker on the map.
đ If your account doesn't have the SWPPP builder, skip step 4. In step 5, Map Marker is at the bottom of the MP Settings card.
The Marker Library
The Map Marker dropdown groups its options under two headings, shown in capital letters.
Group | Options |
SHAPES | Circle with check (default), Manhole, Grate, Water, Arrows left-right, Square, Square (solid), Rhombus, Rhombus (solid), Circle, Circle (solid), Triangle, Triangle (solid) |
UPLOADED ICONS | Images available to your account: custom icons uploaded on your organization's Management Practices (each listed under the Management Practice's name), icons in the SwiftComply library, and symbols saved from your ArcGIS imports. This group appears only when at least one uploaded icon exists, so its contents vary by account. |
Using Your Own Image as the Marker
Icon Settings also has a file upload, below Map Marker, for a custom icon.
đ The custom icon upload is only in Icon Settings, so you can upload your own marker only when your account has the SWPPP builder.
Under Icon Settings, click the file upload and choose an image. A preview of the image appears above the upload.
Click SAVE.
When the image is a PNG, JPEG, or GIF:
It becomes the Management Practice's marker, in place of the shape selected in Map Marker.
It is added to the UPLOADED ICONS group under the Management Practice's name.
An image larger than 128 pixels is scaled down to fit.
It is a single image, so it does not change color with deficiency status.
Other image types, such as SVG, are saved as the custom icon but are not added to the Map Marker list.
A Management Practice's uploaded icon is removed from the UPLOADED ICONS group as soon as that Management Practice stops using it as its marker: when you save it with a different marker, upload a new image, save it with an MP Shape other than Marker, or delete the Management Practice. The icon stays only if another Management Practice uses it as its marker.
How Markers Appear on the Map
Every implementation of a Management Practice uses that Management Practice's marker on the site map and the structures map.
An implementation imported from ArcGIS can carry its own symbol. That symbol is used instead of the Management Practice's marker.
A built-in shape is green while the implementation has no open deficiencies. It turns red when a deficiency is added, and back to green once every deficiency on it is resolved.
An uploaded icon looks the same whether or not there are open deficiencies.
Changing the MP Shape
MP Shape offers Marker, PolyLine, Circle, and Rectangle. Only Marker uses a map marker.
When you switch MP Shape away from Marker, Icon Settings is hidden (including Map Marker and the custom icon upload) and Map Marker resets to Circle with check (default). Stroke Settings appear, plus Fill Settings for Circle and Rectangle.
If you switch back to Marker before saving, Map Marker returns to the marker that was last saved, even if you had picked a different one before switching away.
If you save with a shape other than Marker, no marker is stored. Switching that Management Practice back to Marker later starts from Circle with check (default).
FAQ
Q: I don't see the Map Marker field.
A: When your account has the SWPPP builder, Map Marker shows only while MP Shape is set to Marker. Set MP Shape to Marker and the field appears inside Icon Settings. When your account doesn't have the SWPPP builder, look at the bottom of the MP Settings card.
Q: Why did my marker go back to Circle with check?
A: A few things reset it:
The Management Practice was saved with an MP Shape other than Marker, which stores no marker.
The uploaded icon it used was deleted. A marker that no longer exists falls back to Circle with check (default).
Q: I picked a shape, but the Management Practice shows my uploaded image instead.
A: Saving with a new PNG, JPEG, or GIF in the custom icon upload makes that image the marker, replacing the shape selected in Map Marker for that save. To use a shape, edit the Management Practice again, select the shape in Map Marker, and save without choosing a new file. Your uploaded image is then removed from the UPLOADED ICONS group unless another Management Practice uses it, so to switch back to it later, upload it again.
Q: Will markers still turn red when there is a deficiency?
A: Yes, for every built-in shape. Uploaded icons are a single image and stay the same.
Q: Can I choose the color of a marker?
A: No. A built-in shape's color comes from deficiency status: green with no open deficiencies, red with at least one.
Q: Did my existing Management Practices change?
A: Management Practices on Circle with check (default) keep it, unless they had a PNG, JPEG, or GIF custom icon and were not saved with a PolyLine, Circle, or Rectangle MP Shape. Those now use that custom icon as their marker. A Management Practice that had any other marker chosen keeps it.
Q: There's no EDIT button next to some Management Practices.
A: Those come from the SwiftComply library, which SwiftComply maintains. Only the Management Practices your organization created have EDIT and DELETE buttons.
Q: One implementation shows a different marker from the rest of its type.
A: It was imported from ArcGIS with its own symbol. An imported symbol is used instead of the Management Practice's marker.
