Overview
BMP (Best Management Practice) implementations document the specific practices installed or applied at a site to control stormwater pollution. Each implementation tracks the BMP type, installation site (with GPS coordinates), effectiveness ratings, and any related deficiencies.
Before you begin
BMPs and BMP categories must be configured in Settings > App Settings > Best Management Practices.
Effectiveness ratings must be configured in the admin settings.
Adding a BMP
Open the site.
In the Site Map card, click View Site Map.
Select the BMP marker tool in the map toolbar and click the map where the BMP is installed. The marker's position sets the implementation's GPS coordinates. If the site has implementations that aren't on the map yet, you can pick one to place from the Add Management Practice list and click Continue.
Fill in the details:
Name: A description of this specific installation (e.g., 'North boundary silt fence').
Description: Additional details about the implementation.
Management Practice Type: Select the BMP type from the database (e.g., Silt Fence, Fiber Roll).
Weight of Pollution Mitigation: An effectiveness weight factor. It defaults to the weight set on the selected BMP type, or 1 if that type has none. This field is not shown on every account.
Effectiveness Rating: Rate the BMP's current performance.
Region: Shown when the site has regions.
Click Add Management Practice.
To add images, click Edit in the implementation's map marker popup, click Add Image, and click Save. The Edit page also shows the coordinates as Latitude and Longitude.
đĄ BMP implementations with GPS coordinates appear as interactive markers on the site map. Clicking a marker shows the BMP name and any unresolved deficiencies.
Tracking effectiveness
Open the BMP implementation's Edit page (click Edit in its map marker popup, or Actions > Edit on the Site Map's Management Practices tab).
Update the Effectiveness Rating.
Click Save.
Effectiveness data feeds into the BMP analytics dashboard, allowing you to track performance trends across sites and time periods.
Linking BMPs to deficiencies
When a BMP is failing or has an issue:
Create a deficiency from the BMP implementation on the Site Map: click Add New Deficiency in its marker popup, or Actions > Add Deficiency on the Management Practices tab (this auto-links the BMP).
Or, when creating a deficiency, select the Management Practice Implementation and Management Practice Type fields. Management Practice Implementation appears only when the site has BMP implementations.
The link creates a documented connection between the compliance issue and the mitigation approach.
â ď¸ If a BMP implementation is deleted, its linked deficiencies are unlinked and any still open are automatically resolved, and the implementation's own images are removed.
ESRI/ArcGIS integration
BMP implementations can be synced with ESRI feature layers. Each implementation stores ESRI-specific fields for bidirectional synchronization with ArcGIS Online.

Q: What's the difference between a BMP and a BMP Implementation?
A: A BMP is the practice type from the database (e.g., 'Silt Fence'). A BMP Implementation is a specific instance of that practice at a specific site (e.g., 'Silt Fence along the north boundary of Site A'), with its own coordinates, photos, and effectiveness rating.
Q: Can one BMP type be applied to multiple sites?
A: Yes. The same BMP type can be implemented at as many sites as needed. Each site gets its own implementation record with its own data.
Q: How do BMP effectiveness ratings work in analytics?
A: The Management Practice Effectiveness by Site (Current) view (under Analytics, in the Bmps group) aggregates effectiveness ratings across implementations. BMP analytics can be turned off for an account. The weight field on each implementation affects how much it contributes to the overall score.
Q: Can BMP implementations show on the map?
A: Yes. Implementations with GPS coordinates display as markers on the site map. Each marker shows a popup with the BMP name, type, description, and effectiveness rating, and a list of its open deficiencies.
